How to play

Two "Florida Man" headlines, one real, one fake — pick the real one. Here: modes, scoring, controls, saved data, fair play.

The objective

Each round shows two headlines: one really published by a Florida news outlet, the other written by an AI to sound exactly like it. Pick the real one — the answer comes immediately, with a source link and the share of players who got it right. Real headlines come from the r/FloridaMan community and news feeds and are verified before use: the article must be online (or have an Internet Archive copy), pass a safety review and be tagged by topic. Daily mode

At 00:00 UTC five new pairs are published, the same for everyone; each pairs a real headline with a fake on the same topic. Rounds are played in order, one attempt per day — once you finish, the day is locked in.

Finish on consecutive UTC days to grow your day streak; miss a day and it resets to one. The result screen shows a spoiler-free grid: 🐊 for each correct answer, 🦩 for each wrong one, in round order — safe to share before friends play. Coming back the same day resumes where you left off: a partly played day jumps to your first unanswered round, a finished day to your result.

Endless mode

Endless mode deals random pairs from the same pool until your first mistake. Pairs arrive in batches of ten, topped up as you play, so rounds appear instantly. Your best streak is saved in your browser and shown on the game-over screen. Endless runs never touch your daily score.

Scoring and stats

After each pick you see whether you were right and what share of players got the pair right ("68% of players got this one right"). The percentage aggregates all answers ever given for that pair — not just today, not just you. Each browser counts once per pair per day via a random anonymous id, so reloading or replaying cannot move the numbers; the first player on a fresh pair sees "You're the first to answer this one." instead. No leaderboard, no login, no profile: your benchmark is the pair in front of you and, in daily mode, your streak.

Controls

Tap or click the headline you believe is real. Keyboard: 1 or A (or ←) picks the left headline, 2 or B (or →) the right, Enter continues. Shortcuts are ignored while Alt, Ctrl or Meta is held.

After you answer, focus moves to the Next button; the site is keyboard-navigable with a visible focus outline and a skip link. Reduced motion in your system switches off hovers and progress animations. The theme follows your device's light or dark setting; the ◐ button on the home page overrides it, and your choice sticks on every page.

What is saved on your device

All progress lives in your browser's local storage: no accounts, no cookies from us. Advertising and its consent message, once enabled, are served by Google AdSense as described in the privacy policy.

• fmn.clientId — a random anonymous id so each answer counts once

Session-only values disappear when you close the tab: the fetched daily set (fmn.dailySet.<date>), the endless queue (fmn.endless.queue), the current run's streak and its final value (fmn.endless.streak, fmn.endless.final).

Supported browsers and devices

The game is mobile-first and runs in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on phones, tablets and computers; it needs standard fetch and web-storage support. If your browser blocks storage (strict private browsing), the game falls back to memory for the session. If the servers cannot be reached you get an error message with a Try again button, and your progress is untouched; an already loaded day keeps working when the connection drops (the set is cached for the session), and arriving before the day's set exists gets a "try again in a few minutes" note.

Known limitations

• One daily set serves the whole world. It resets at 00:00 UTC — 8 pm the previous evening in New York, 10 am in Sydney.
• Headlines are English-only, collected from English-language outlets.
• Articles sometimes disappear from publishers' sites. The game then links an Internet Archive copy; without one, the headline is dropped rather than shown unlinked.
• Early in the day, or on a brand-new pair, the "X % of players" figure rests on few answers and moves quickly. Treat it as a curiosity, not a poll.
• Your progress lives in your browser: another device, another browser or cleared storage starts from zero.

Fair play

The numbers are protected server-side: each anonymous browser counts once per pair per day, repeats are ignored, and the API is rate-limited. The daily challenge has no replay button — a finished day always lands on the result screen. With no login, a determined player could clear their browser data and start over as a fresh anonymous visitor; nothing ties a score to a person, which is also why there is no leaderboard.
